So welcome to this, the first post in Scoring for Fun, a new Guild Ball blog.
Love at first sight... |
Just a word of introduction. I’ve been playing games since I was 12, and started the well-trodden path with Warhammer 40K, lovingly throwing my Ork Speed Freeks across the table at people. I later made the step from round bases to square when Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition was a thing, and developed a fixation with Stonehorns. My latest stop was the Wyrd world of Malifaux where I’ve been for the last 3 years, having an enormous amount of fun and no small amount of success.
My Malifaux weapon of choice. I like redheads with blades... |
Guild Ball has been a game I was always aware of. My gaming group the Leicester Squigs were in on the Kickstarter and I played Brewers, but after a bad game against Engineers who knocked my entire team over turn after turn I rage quit season 1 in frustration.
Season 2 went a little better – Smoke and her Alchemists caught my eye and I played a few games, but Guild Ball didn’t gain much local traction and it didn’t really make enough of an impact to stick with me.
I tried. I failed. |
Season 3 though? Now we’re talking. It’s fixed the vast majority of the problems I had with earlier seasons and now I find the game is just genuinely fun. It flows well, the rules are intuitive and make sense, and the models, always a strong point, are still awesome.
I’d probably admit to being a competitive player. I enjoy tournaments, always have done. You don’t play them for 15 years if you don’t! But first and foremost, I want to enjoy myself and have a laugh. We play games for fun and that’s my whole ethos. I don’t give a monkeys about my results as long as it’s been fun getting there. I have been known for a while as the only person who can turn up to a Malifaux event and be capable of winning, taking the spoon or anything in between, and none of those results would raise an eyebrow. Consistency is overrated…
How I get my self esteem on |
Another thing I enjoy is writing, and given the comparative scarcity of blogs relative to YouTube channels and podcasts, I thought I’d give it a go.
Sitting here, I think I’ve played a whole 13 games in season 3. I would class myself very much as a rookie – I’ve not played against Alchemists, Blacksmiths, Brewers, Butchers, Hunters or Union, for example, and I’ve only played with my Union.
So this blog will end up hopefully charting progress from kerb-stomped noob to someone with half a clue what’s going on. I want to share my thoughts on events, particular questions I see rolling round on Twitter and Facebook, some ideas on match-ups and the like. I have no shortage of opinions, I think I’m fairly good at expressing them, so here we go!
